FEATURED BAND EPISODE #2
In 1995, the old burnt-out steel town of Ambridge, PA spawned a grunge-metal band called "Chunk Crack and Yogurtsack." They started recording demos and playing shows throughout the Pittsburgh area as a three-piece featuring Chris Semonik, Mike Yagercik, and Robb Hideck. With a luke-warm reception into the Pittsburgh rock scene, the band of three high school kids concentrated on improving their songwriting and performing talents usually playing only for free beer. Along the way, they managed to put out some good demos and garner some local radio airplay on WDVE and WYEP. By 1997, the band had started opening up to more influences and changing interests. A friend of the band, Nathan Harmon joined as lead vocalist. The album "Bricks" was recorded on a 4-track cassette deck. Though it represented a valiant effort, the CD was lacking in modern production quality, and was eventually discontinued. In the summer of '99, the band, now shortening the name to CCY, parted with their lead vocalist, and joined up with longtime friends Neil Balcer and Rob Klaich, who had previously played with Chris and Mike since high school and in a side project in college. Drawing from CCY's hard rock and punk roots, and adding the hip hop and classic rock tastes of the new members, Black Out Punch was formed in late 1999. Over the period of a year, a new album was recorded featuring new collaborations and reworked CCY tunes. The album was recorded digitally and self-produced in true D.I.Y. fashion at Chunktopia Studios (a fancy name for Chunk's basement). The self-titled Black Out Punch debut album came out in January of 2001. Things were about to take off, or so it would seem until April 8, 2001 when the band was dealt a devistating loss. Keyboardist Neil Balcer had drowned in a kayaking accident. Neil was a longtime friend who, before joining the band, had been playing with the guys as far back as high school jazz band. After actually joining the band, he had become like a brother. The band immediately cancelled everything. However it was apparent that Neil would have wanted the band to continue, and he was always pushing to get a second guitarist, so Black Out Punch would finally take his advice. The band started jamming with fellow college friend/DJ/guitarist Scott Nottingham, and eventually asked him to join the band in the fall of 2001. Scott is the first non-Ambridge native ever to join the band. Since then, Black Out Punch has been busy writing new material and playing everywhere they see fit.
